What is Geomancy or Feng Shui?

The ancient practice of geomancy is not only a means of divination, but also a logical way of foretelling the future based on external phenomena. According to the geomancer, if the ancestral burial groiund is of 'good' condition, the future generations would enjoy great fortune and good health. An example of this phenomenon was how Zhu Yuan Zhang succeeded in becoming the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty soon after his fisherman father buried his grandfather at a site known as the 'Cave for the King'.

To the ancient Chinese death was relative to life and was considered an extension of living. They also held the belief that everything in the universe was intimately related. In fact, several other mystical philosophies believe that every movement in the universe gives rise to a reciprocal movement. For example. the principle of mathematical relationship found in Babylonian and Egyptian astrology and indian philosophy holds the belief that motion and change are the alternating energies that control breathing. These beliefs are the basic to the geomantic philosophy. Thus, man could only overcome his limitations by uniting all the energies or forces of nature with that of the Superiot Being and harmonizing the flux of yin and yang.
